On Coding

I first started coding this website in March 2023 on a whim. I'd never coded before, never made a website before, and only ever done the very most bare-bones HTML on AO3. I knew nothing of CSS, webmastering, or anything else. I found NeoCities, and decided to sign up, since I figured it would be an interesting creative hobby which wasn't consumptive and didn't require any materials or equipment. I started with the NeoCities tutorial, then used w3schools to learn more about HTML and CSS. You can see my very first tester pages over here.

Since then I've been learning and refining my understanding of HTML and CSS coding. I think I mostly have divs and flexbox down, but I'm hoping to start learning a bit more about semantic HTML, and more complex CSS. I am also considering learning JavaScript and Python, so we'll see how that goes!! Wish me luck.

So, you want to know more about the webmaster, huh? Well, I'll do my best, since I'm bad at talking about myself.

I'm really just a guy who's been using computers and the internet since I was tiny, for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory of really using a computer is my dad letting me sit in his lap and play Grand Theft Auto on his PC. I'm from the days of Windows 2000 and XP, MSN, The Sims 2, and loading times that felt like they took forever. Not quite The Old Internet, but certainly older than the current net.

As I've gotten older, I've both started to feel a nostalgia for the online landscape that I remember - Pointless Sites, BBC Science & Nature: Prehistoric Life, and thesims2.com, to name just a few examples - and also learned more about how older and other parts of the web used to be. This, alongside my distaste for the late-stage capitalist hellscape we're living in and the ways it has changed the online world, has lead me to develop an interest in the Old Web and its revival. Enter NeoCities!! I really wanted a palce I could make my own, somewhere I could be a little more myself, indulge in my interest, and talk about my opinions without having to worry about friends or colleagues managing to find it - and without any worry about callout posts and other petty drama. Yeah I'm looking at you, Tumblr and Twitter.

And so, for those reasons, I'm going to go by the old Internet Rules I grew up with - no real names, not too many identifying details, and no photos. We're going A/S/L, online pseudonym, using an avatar oldskool-style. With this in mind, lets get into me:

You can call me Damian. I was born in 1996. I'm a trans man, ace-spec, bisexual, and engaged to the love of my life. I'm hoping to go into palaeontology or zoology as a profession - I studied Palaeontology at BSc Hons level, and am considering Zoology at MSc. All over this page, you'll see little bits of information to tell you more about me, and things that reflect what I like and what interests me. And of course, this whole website has been coded by me and filled with stuff I like. So, click around, poke into every corner, and I hope you enjoy my little piece of the Internet!!
